Volcano Views and Cobblestone Heartbeats

Day 24 updated Pines 2 Patagonia log

Huehuetenango - Antigua

What a beautiful day. The ride to Antigua was one of the most enjoyable days we have had on the bikes this far.

Huge mountains where the roads are carved into the side follow each and every ridge and valley twisting and turning with stunning views around each corner.

As we rode these exhilarating roads for hours were we’re blessed to see hundreds of hand tilled fields checkerboard every inch of useable the land. We saw the peaks of volcanos emerging from the cloud layers. When we thought it couldn’t get any better, we descended into one of the most spectacular sights we had witnessed on this trip, Lago de Atitlán.

The tarmac down to the lake would be challenging to navigate on their own. When you add hundreds of cars, motos and a few dozen “Chicken Busses” attempting to set land speed records, you better bring your A game or it’s not going to be good.

We found a wonderful restaurant to stop for lunch that was right on the water and had a stunning view of the Volcano on the other side of the lake. The iced coffee was also a very welcomed treat.

After lunch we dunked our heads into the crisp water and mounted back up in route to Antigua.

You could feel the heartbeat of the city when we rolled into town although some of that may have been the horrific cobble stone roads beneath our tires.

We checked into our accommodations and headed out to explore Antigua and all of its history. The city center was just a short walk from our house. It was filled with vendors, music and people… lots of people.
