Forgotten Starlink & Found Hospitality: The Long Ride to Acapulco
Day 14 Pines 2 Patagonia log
Playa Azul - 1.5 hrs South - 1.5 hrs back to Playa Azul - Acapulco
Hotel Posada Del Mar in Playa Azul went the extra mile and saved the trip!!! At least our WiFi for the trip.
During the process of loading the bikes back up to depart Playa Azul and head to Acápulco, someone with a nickname that rhymes with Ted… removed the Starlink to secure the latch on the inside of his box AND FORGOT TO PUT IT BACK ON.
Roughly an hour into the day, Matt has a check engine light come on. We pulled over so he could take a look at it, and surprise… Adam and Red found a place to eat. After Matt looked up and cleared the code, he got a bite to eat as well and we were off once again. It was about 20 later that Red noticed the Starlink was missing.
Using 2 phones, one to place the call and one to assist with translation we were able to confirm it was right where I had left it and they would hold it. This was heartbreaking as we had finally got our butts on the road before 0900 because we knew we had a long hot day in front of us.
We arrived and retrieved the Starlink and they would not accept a tip or reward. They told us to have fun and be safe and that they would be following along.
After Red apologized to the boys a few times and agreed to buy drinks and dinner we hit the road… AGAIN.
It was a long, hard ride to Acapulco. We stopped several times for water and shade. Upon reaching our destination we had to endure 15km of stop and go Valentines Day traffic. It’s a big deal here in Mexico and we were in a destination city.
It took over an hour to get checked in and get our bikes secured. After getting rid of the road grim we headed downstairs to really check out the world renowned Copacabana . What a let down. So we hit the streets which we saturated with club music and full bars and restaurants. We walked into several places with no tables or chairs to be found.
As we were about to give up, we spotted a very small dive bar on the other side of the main road. We took a chance and walked through the door. As the only three non local people in the bar, we were pleased to be met by an gracious host and the owner. They took excellent care of us and even got us away from the town drunk we named “Carl”. They placed us at a nice private table where we could watch the fútbol game. In all honesty we were unsure who to cheer for, so we just kept our mouth shut, and then sided with the majority.
We were quickly included into the festivities of a young ladies 21st Birthday celebration including birthday cake and graced by a local tequila reps samples. Soon enough the game was over, the band started playing and we were listening to American classic rock jams in Spanish. It’s was so RAD!
We called it a night long before our new friends and agreed to a no alarm morning. We may have had a rough time getting to Acapulco, however it took good care of us.
We were all pleased to see Day 14 come to a close and end with such a wonderful and memorable night on the town.
